A Sentence Fragment is an Incomplete Sentence

A sentence fragment is an incomplete sentence; a phrase or clause that is punctuated and capitalized as a sentence but does not constitute a complete grammatical sentence. Usually caused by the failure to include a subject and a verb in a sentence. One of the easiest ways to correct this grammatical error is to remove the period between the fragment and the main clause.

Academic and formal business documents should not include sentence fragments. Periodicals often use a dependent clause as a separate sentence following a clear and succinct main clause for emphasis. This practice is considered controversial and should be avoided if possible.
